Coto de Caza History

Coto de Caza originated as a real western working ranch in the 1700s, complete with a hunting lodge and riding center.

In 1979, the property was purchased by Arvida, a Florida based resort development company and developed it as a hunting lodge resort.

The well known western film actor, John Wayne, kept his horse Pretty Boy at the Coto ranch, and he practiced shooting on its range. Recreational facilities were constructed to support the activities for the hunting and equestrian clientele.

Coto de Caza is now an upscale, woodland-filled, environmentally attuned, master planned community located 12 miles inland and 18 miles southeast of Irvine, in the canyon lands east of Mission Viejo, just southeast of and right next door to Rancho Santa Margarita in the Plano Trabuco area consisting of foothills and mesas of Santa Ana Mountains. This is a fairly secluded community built with a golf course as its focal point. Coto is part of Rancho Santa Margarita which provides police protection inside the gates of the community. Coto de Caza has a small general store and a private primary school but is essentially a bedroom community. Coto de Caza covers about 4,000 acres, half of which are reserved as open space. The population of Coto De Caza is about 13,057 as of 2002.

Orange County Officials approved Coto’s master plan for a community of some 5,000 homes in 1983. The Coto de Caza community officially opened after three short years with many gorgeous homes with sweeping views, of countryside at the hill tops with upscale suburban tracts located on grassy ranchland knolls, two-story, 3-5 bedroom single family homes with an option to convert the den into a bedroom. Security gates at entrances, staffed with guards protect residents and make this one of the safest communities in Orange County. New home building still continues gradually with new units of up to 8 bedrooms with an average dwelling size of 7 rooms, however, Coto de Caza’s home sites are nearly build out. Homes and condos Coto de Caza are about 96 percent owner occupied and home values average around 650K.

Coto De Caza homeowners do most of their shopping, dinning, movies and library trip in Rancho Santa Margarita with all the conveniences of a modern suburb  just outside gates. The median age in Coto De Caza is 35. Young people, under age 21 account for 27 percent of residents.

Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club, in the center of the community, offers golf, tennis and social memberships and features 2 championship 18-hole courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. The North Course measures at least 7000 yards from the tees. The South Course emphasizes driving accuracy.

Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club offers nine lighted tennis courts, a pro-shop, and a qualified staff providing lessons for all levels of play. Private lessons, clinics, and tournaments help members improve their game while bringing homeowners together.

The Aquatics Center is complete with a jr. Olympic pool, adult only pool, a toddlers' wading pool, a snack bar at poolside and a complete fitness center. The world-class clubhouse of fine architecture offers formal and casual dining, lounge, men's and ladies' card room, locker rooms, saunas, Jacuzzis and both a golf and tennis pro shop.

Hike, jog, roller blade, mountain bike,  ride your horse, or just walk on one of more than 40 miles of trails that wind in and around Coto de Caza with connections to Riley Wilderness Park and Casper's Wilderness Park.

THE COTO VALLEY EQUESTRIAN CENTER

Thomas F. Riley Wilderness Park, 475-acres ceded to Orange County in 1994 from the original Coto property.

The Coto Valley Community Club is an all-inclusive recreation center in Coto De Caza, featuring tennis, racquetball, in-line skating hockey rinks, a swimming pool and a full service gymnasium in the fitness club complete with basketball courts and features special programs throughout the year. Live bands often play on the pool deck in summertime, Sunday afternoons.  (949) 589-5000.

Homeowners in Coto De Caza are also privileged to the center's  full service Equestrian Center. The riding center was used for modern equestrian pentathlon events during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. The Equestrian Center boards for 160 horses and includes five arenas and 47 miles of trails in the surrounding wilderness, complete training and riding facilities. The Coto De Caza area is served by the Capistrano school district. State academic rankings fall in the range of 8Oth to 90th percentile, which means that students in Coto De Caza are among the top in the state.

• Transportation

In 1994, Oso Parkway was extended from Interstate 5 to Coto de Caza’s south gate, and in 1995 when the Foothill transportation corridor, a toll highway and feeder system, opened up easy access to the north and will eventually extend south to  the Ortega Highway.
